What is acute pain?

Acute pain is pain of a short, limited duration, usually the result of an injury, surgery or medical illness. Acute pain often goes away with the healing process.

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain continues for longer periods of time, sometimes even long after the healing of the original injury is expected to have occurred. Chronic pain is also associated with frustration, depression and anxiety.

What is interventional pain management?

Interventional pain management refers to a group of minimally invasive surgical procedures typically done as an outpatient to alleviate acute, chronic, or cancer-related pain conditions.

How much pain reduction can a person expect?

The amount of pain reduction is never certain at the beginning of treatment. Typically, a patient will receive 50% to 100% reduction in pain through pain management treatment. Unfortunately, chronic pain is like many other chronic illnesses in that frequently the treatment can only reduce the symptoms.

Do I need a referral from my primary physician?

In most cases, yes, you will need a referral from your primary care physician.

Will I need to bring results from previous examinations?

Our physicians will need to review any reports from other doctors, including X-ray, MRI or CT examinations. Other tests that you may have had performed in the past relating to your pain problem. Is pain management covered by health insurance?

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Because diagnosing the cause or source of pain can be difficult, patients coming to Republic Spine & Pain first receive an in-depth evaluation that investigates the: 

  • Location of the pain
  • Character of the pain (sharp, throbbing, aching)
  • Occurrence of the pain (evening, activity levels, positioning)

This information and a complete physical exam help the providers devise an individualized course of therapy. Sometimes patients are asked to keep a pain journal, recording specific information whenever they experience pain.

When will I receive my results?

Our staff will schedule you for a follow-up appointment, at which time your physician will sit down with you and provide a detailed explanation of your diagnosis and treatment options in detail.

How long will my treatment take?

Since pain is a complex and individual problem, the length and type of treatment varies from patient to patient. In some cases a simple procedure will help, while in others, a lifelong approach will be necessary. Your physician will explain your diagnosis and treatment options in detail.

New Patient FAQs

What do I need to bring to my first new patient appointment?

It is very important for all patients currently on a pain medicine regimen to bring in all current pain medications in their original bottles. We also ask that you bring your driver’s license, insurance card, co-payment and any medical records that have not already been faxed.

How soon can a new patient be seen?

New patient appointments vary due to location, provider availability, and the patient’s schedule. Because this is a pain management practice, we make every effort to see you as soon as possible. Appointments can be scheduled as soon as 24 to 48 hours after the initial call.

Will I receive a prescription for medications at my new patient appointment?

Republic Spine & Pain must perform appropriate and required diligence to investigate each patient’s claim regarding their medication prescriptions. This process will require confirmation of the medication regimen with the original prescriber of the medication.

Documentation regarding the date of the most recent prescription(s) with the number prescribed and any refills noted will be reviewed. Issues of previous non-compliance with narcotics or medications prescribed will need to be reviewed.

What can I expect at my new patient appointment check-in?

To provide the safest and most effective care for our patients, we do gather a very in-depth patient history and questionnaire. We will also run a standard drug screening at this time as well. Due to the amount of time it takes to collect all of this information, we do ask that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.

Can I be late to an appointment?

It is required that you check in 15 minutes prior to a regular office visit or a procedure being performed without sedation. If you are having a procedure with sedation, we ask that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.

We ask that you come in prior to your scheduled time so that the appropriate administrative and clinical paperwork can be completed and ready for your procedure as well as any pre-procedural tasks that need to be completed. Failure to arrive at the requested time may result in cancellation of your appointment.

Billing/ Insurance FAQs

Can I be billed for my co-payment?

No, co-payment is due at the time of service. All deductibles and additional co-pays will be further billed after your insurance assessment.

What insurances do you accept?

Republic Spine & Pain participates with a comprehensive list of health insurance providers. When you schedule your appointment, our staff will take your insurance information and verify coverage with your insurance provider. If you are unsure of your health coverage, do not hesitate to call our staff at (512) 219-8787.

Will I be billed by you or my insurance for any procedures or office visits?

You will be billed by Republic Spine & Pain P.A. Urinary drug screens and sedation services are services that will be billed by Republic Spine & Pain P.A.

Procedure FAQs

How long will my procedure take?

Most procedures take anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Some of our more intricate interventional procedures may take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Each patient procedure, along with risks, benefits and alternatives, is discussed prior to each procedure.

Can I eat or drink before my procedure?

When receiving sedation, you should not eat (6 - 8 hours) prior to the procedure. You may have clear liquids up to (2 hours) prior to your procedure. Any questions regarding this policy should be addressed with our clinical team prior to arriving for your procedure.

Should I continue taking my medications as usual?

For the most part, yes. The only exception would be blood thinners. If you are on blood thinners, please discuss this with the pain physician, as these will likely need to be stopped for a period of time before your procedure.

Do I need a driver present when I am having a procedure done?

For all procedures performed with sedation, a driver IS mandatory. For procedures without sedation, it is always helpful to have a driver available should you need one, but it is not mandatory.

What is the expected recovery time of a procedure?

Most of our patients are given a 15 – 30 minute recovery period in our supervised recovery room immediately following each procedure. Certain interventional procedures that are more aggressive may require a short recovery period with rest at home prior to returning to normal activities.

How long will it take to get my procedure authorized?

7 – 10 business days, depending on your insurance

Are there any side effects?

The potential side effects of most procedures are minimal, and specific details will be reviewed with you by your physician prior to any procedure.

Who will be performing my procedure?

All physicians at Republic Spine & Pain are fellowship-trained specialists and are able to perform all of the interventional procedures offered here.

Why do I have to wait to get my procedure authorized?

Most insurance requires medical dictation demonstrating and supporting the medical necessity of an interventional procedure performed at Republic Spine & Pain. The waiting period for authorization typically includes time for the pain provider to dictate the medical necessity for the procedure and the receipt and review of documentation by your insurance carrier prior to approval.
